Santa Marta, Colombia’s oldest surviving city, combines Caribbean charm, colonial history, and spectacular natural beauty. Founded in 1525, it sits between the Caribbean Sea and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The city also serves as a gateway to Tayrona National Park, one of Colombia’s most iconic natural destinations.

The surrounding region offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Relax on palm-fringed beaches, swim in clear Caribbean waters, or snorkel along the coast. In Tayrona, hiking trails lead through tropical forests and along rugged coastlines. The park also shelters monkeys, colourful birds, and other wildlife.

Santa Marta itself offers a mix of history and modern Caribbean life. Walk through the historic centre, visit the waterfront, or explore lively plazas and local markets. The city also makes a convenient base for trips into the Sierra Nevada, including nearby Minca and other mountain communities.

Food is another highlight. Try fresh seafood, Caribbean rice dishes, tropical fruit, and other local specialities. In the evening, Parque de los Novios becomes one of the city’s liveliest spots. Restaurants, cafés, bars, and live music fill the square and its surrounding streets.

With its coastal setting, historic centre, nearby mountains, and easy access to nature, Santa Marta offers a lively base for exploring Colombia’s Caribbean region.
