Did You Know?

Colombia’s Pacific Region is one of the country’s most biodiverse areas. Dense rainforests, powerful rivers, mangroves, and remote beaches stretch along the Pacific coast. At the same time, strong Afro-Colombian and Indigenous traditions shape everyday life across the region.

  • The Pacific is one of the wettest regions on Earth: Places such as Buenaventura and Chocó receive enormous amounts of rainfall each year. As a result, the region supports dense rainforests, rivers, and some of Colombia’s richest ecosystems.
  • The Pacific is a whale-watching paradise: Every year, humpback whales travel from Antarctica to Colombia’s warm Pacific waters. Between July and October, they come to mate, give birth, and raise their calves.
  • The region is a biodiversity hotspot: The Pacific rainforest shelters countless species of plants, birds, amphibians, and mammals. Moreover, many species are endemic to this part of Colombia.
  • The Pacific is home to incredible marine life: Its mangroves, coral reefs, and coastal waters provide important habitats for sea turtles, dolphins, whales, and numerous fish species. Meanwhile, remote beaches offer spectacular settings far from mass tourism.
  • Afro-Colombian culture plays a central role: The Pacific has one of Colombia’s largest Afro-Colombian populations. Music, dance, food, and traditional knowledge reflect a strong African heritage mixed with Indigenous and European influences.
  • Music brings communities together: Traditional rhythms such as currulao form an important part of Pacific culture. Marimbas, drums, and singing accompany celebrations, ceremonies, and everyday life.
  • The region has a strong connection to its rivers: Rivers remain essential for transport and daily life in many remote communities. Small boats often provide the main way to reach villages, forests, and beaches.
  • The Pacific offers some of Colombia’s most secluded experiences: Destinations such as Nuquí, Bahía Solano, and the San Juan region combine rainforest, rivers, and pristine beaches. Visitors can hike through the jungle, explore mangroves, surf, or enjoy the region’s extraordinary wildlife.

From rainforests and rivers to whales and secluded beaches, Colombia’s Pacific Region offers a remarkable combination of biodiversity, Afro-Colombian heritage, and coastal landscapes
