Ráquira is a small town in the Andean highlands of Boyacá and Colombia’s renowned ceramics capital. Locals also call it the “Potter’s Village”. Colorful houses, cobbled streets, and lively artisan workshops give the town its distinctive character.
Pottery forms an important part of Ráquira’s cultural identity. Local artisans have worked with clay for generations. The tradition dates back to pre-Columbian times, when Indigenous communities used local clay to create everyday objects and ceremonial pieces. Today, visitors can explore workshops and watch artisans shape jugs, tiles, figurines, and decorative crafts by hand.
The town itself feels like an open-air gallery. Brightly painted façades line the streets, while ceramic figures and handmade decorations appear throughout the centre. One of the main landmarks is La Mano del Artesano, a giant hand-shaped sculpture with a viewpoint overlooking the town and surrounding hills.
In the main square, the historic Church of San Antonio de la Pared adds another layer of heritage. Its colonial architecture and stonework contrast beautifully with the colorful buildings around it.
Ráquira also provides a great base for exploring the countryside. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills, fertile valleys, and dramatic rock formations. Hiking trails lead to places such as Cueva de la Fábrica and the ochre cliffs of Sáchica Canyon. Nearby, the Monastery of La Candelaria offers a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.
For a longer excursion, travellers can visit Laguna de Iguaque, a sacred site in Muisca mythology. The trail crosses cloud forests before reaching the high-altitude lagoon and its spectacular mountain scenery.
