Villa de Leyva is one of Colombia’s most charming colonial towns. Founded in 1572, it lies in the department of Boyacá, about three hours by car from Bogotá. Its whitewashed buildings, cobbled streets, and historic houses create a distinctive colonial atmosphere.

The town became a national monument in 1954. At its heart lies the impressive Plaza Mayor, one of the largest cobbled squares in South America. The square covers around 14,000 m² and forms the center of local life. Markets, festivals, and cultural events take place here throughout the year.

Villa de Leyva also offers a rich cultural and historical heritage. Explore its churches, museums, artisan shops, and traditional houses. The town is particularly known for its fossils and paleontological discoveries. The surrounding area was once covered by an ancient sea, leaving behind an abundance of marine fossils.

Beyond the historic center, the landscape changes quickly. The surrounding mountains, valleys, and dry forests offer excellent opportunities for outdoor activities. Hike, cycle, or explore the area on horseback. Along the way, you can discover waterfalls, lagoons, caves, and archaeological sites.

Villa de Leyva also makes an excellent base for exploring the wider Boyacá region. Nearby destinations such as Ráquira, Sáchica, and the Iguaque Sanctuary offer further insights into local traditions, nature, and indigenous heritage.
