More Than a Historic Aircraft
A flight aboard the legendary Douglas DC-3 offers much more than an extraordinary travel experience. In some of Colombia’s most remote regions, these aircraft still connect isolated communities with the rest of the country.
In places with few roads, rivers remain important transport routes. Air travel often provides the only practical connection. DC-3 flights carry passengers, food, medicine, building materials and other essential supplies to remote settlements.
A True Workhorse of the Skies
The DC-3 first took to the skies in the 1930s as a passenger aircraft. It soon became one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history. Its robust design and ability to operate from short, unpaved airstrips made it particularly useful in remote areas.
During the Berlin Airlift, the aircraft became famous for carrying supplies to West Berlin. Pilots and locals later gave some of these aircraft the nickname “Candy Bomber” or “Raisin Bomber.”
In Colombia, the DC-3 found a very different role. It became a workhorse for remote communities, helping people and supplies reach places far beyond the country’s main road network.
Flying into the Amazon
Today, a DC-3 journey combines aviation history with an unforgettable Amazon experience. As the aircraft leaves the more developed areas behind, the vast rainforest stretches out below. The flight takes you towards remote destinations that remain difficult to reach by road.
The journey also offers a glimpse into everyday life in parts of Colombia where aviation plays an essential role. Here, the DC-3 represents more than nostalgia. It remains part of the connection between remote communities and the wider country.
